Travel itinerary (Detailed)

    Arrival in Oviedo

Fill out your Pilgrim's Credential (Passport) and prepare to start your Camino. Before you do, explore the charming city of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, which is also a busy and lively university city and has been a place of pilgrimage for many centuries.
Be sure to visit some of the city's main monuments, such as the elegant Cathedral of Our Savior (Catedral de Nuestro Salvador), the Church of San Miguel de Lillo, the Church of San Tirso, and the Monastery of San Vicente, which houses the Archaeological Museum of Asturias (Museo Arqueológico de Asturias).

Stage 1, from Oviedo to Tineo

    Distance : 73 km Difficulty : 3/5

Breakfast and start of the stage. The Camino begins in the center of Oviedo at the Cathedral of El Salvador and heads west of the city. The path here follows the wonderful Nora River before a steep climb up to the picturesque village of Escamplero.
The next part of the stage gets easier, descending through small villages and farmland, passing the Monastery of Nuestro Salvador, which is well worth a visit. After Cornellana, there are a few more climbs, and you will see many hórreos (typical granaries of the Asturias region), before the path softens towards Salas. The final part is quite challenging due to the number of hills.

  • 3

Stage 2, from Tineo to Berducedo

    Distance : 44,5 km Difficulty : 4/5

Breakfast and start of the stage. Today's route will take us through difficult terrain, quiet and picturesque forests, and past Vega de Rey. Then we will tackle a climb of almost 600 meters to reach the summit of Puerto del Palo. Here, the ascent will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Cantabrian Mountains.
Further ahead, there is a sharp descent of about 250m on what is called the "Camino de los Hospitales" (Path of the Hospitals), so great care must be taken.

  • 4

Stage 3, from Berducedo to A Fonsagrada

    Distance : 45,6 km Difficulty : 3/5

Breakfast and start of the stage. From Berducedo, we will climb to the Wind Turbines (Aerogeneradores) located at an altitude of 1,100m. From here, there are magnificent views over the Navia River, the Salime reservoir, and the surrounding mountains.
Afterward, there is a very steep descent, with a drop of 900 meters in just 7 kilometers, down to the Salime reservoir dam.
The Camino continues with another tough climb to El Acebo, located at 1,050m.
From here, we will have other spectacular views of the Cantabrian Mountains and the border between Asturias and Galicia, the land of the Celts.
We will arrive at the village of A Fonsagrada, famous for being the setting of one of the miracles of the Apostle Saint James.

  • 5

Stage 4, from A Fonsagrada to Lugo

    Distance : 53,8 km Difficulty : 3/5

Breakfast and start of the stage. The Camino today follows a route through the villages of Calzada, A Lastra, and A Fontaneira until reaching O Cadavo Baleira. This village is considered the second most important community on the Camino Primitivo.
On the way to the ancient and charming town of Pradeda, you will see some of the slate mines that make this area famous. In the village, there are a number of straw-roofed dwellings known as pallozas.
After a ride through more farmland, the Camino reaches Lugo.

  • 6

Stage 5, from Lugo to Melide

    Distance : 46,5 km Difficulty : 1/5

Breakfast and start of the stage. This stage continues to San Román de Retorta through farmland and forests.
The route then continues through Toques, to the historic town of Melide in A Coruña. This is the place where the Camino Primitivo joins the French Way (Camino Francés).
Don't miss the chance to try pulpo (octopus) in one of the many pulperías and to have some melindres, the traditional anise cakes of the town.

  • 7

Stage 6, from Melide to Santiago de Compostela

    Distance : 50 km Difficulty : 1/5

Breakfast and start of the stage. In this section, we will find pleasant and easy terrain to ride, alternating between wooded areas and sections close to the road, which we will have to cross occasionally.
This is a stage of anxiety and joy, where distance doesn't matter because "it's right there."
The Camino continues gently, except for the climb to San Marcos, from Lavacolla. This place gets its name from the stop pilgrims used to make before arriving in Santiago, to wash themselves in the river that runs through there and "present themselves before the Apostle." You will pass Monte do Gozo and descend into Santiago de Compostela.
All of Santiago de Compostela is worthy of mention, especially its Cathedral, which deserves a special visit, as do its surroundings.
