Northern Way from Irún to Santander: 12 stages

Information about the trip: Northern Way from Irún to Santander: 12 stages

This ancient route began receiving pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela from the former Kingdom of Asturias in the 9th century. Many of them arrived by sea from France, England, Flandes, and Scandinavian countries. As the Reconquista advanced, the French Way gained prominence over other routes, like this one, which saw less traffic.

In recent decades, the Northern Way has experienced a resurgence and is now one of the favorite options due to the beauty of its surroundings and the prominent role of the Cantabrian Sea. Also known as the Coastal Way, this route starts in Irún, crosses the Basque Country, and continues to Cantabria.

Some sections run along the coastline, offering stunning views of beaches and cliffs. Others take you inland, combining mountains, valleys, and forests. The itinerary always stays close to towns, small cities, and villages, providing the necessary services for the journey.
